We are celebrating BreakLine Education alum Vance Kernes. He joined Vanta as an Implementation Manager! Here is part of his story:

“I was born and raised on the Central Coast of California, home to the world-famous Santa Maria BBQ. My parents were amazing role models and instilled a strong work ethic in me and my siblings.

After high school, I held down various jobs while putting myself through college. I was blessed to meet my wife in that season of life as well. 

I had always wanted to serve my country in the military, and I enlisted in the Air Force in 2017. This was an immensely transformative time. My wife and I were fortunate to have healthy twin daughters, and I also became the first person in my family to graduate from college with a bachelor’s degree. 

I joined the BreakLine community when I was ready to transition to a career in the tech industry. So many BreakLine alumni took time out of their days to answer my questions and help me navigate the journey of finding a role that aligned with my goals. 

Sophia Beaudoin and Brandon Self helped me connect with Vanta, where I am currently an implementation manager. Vanta has an authentic mission of protecting consumer data and restoring trust in internet businesses. 

I foster positive relationships with our customers and help them achieve the full business value of our products. I’m constantly striving to improve retention and increase product adoption.

When I look back on my transition process, two things that helped were being curious and prepared. I read everything I could find about Vanta. I watched every interview online, reviewed every blog, researched their values.

And I also practiced and role-played for obvious interview questions. I practiced with my wife, I practiced with my two-year-old daughters – they just looked at me, but I still got my reps in – I practiced in the shower. When my shot came, I was ready.”
