BreakLiner Avian Jordan landed a Deployment Manager role at BetterUp! Here is part of his story:
“In high school, I was team captain in three varsity sports. Later on at Missouri S&T, I majored in engineering management and also played football and ran track. After graduating from college, I decided to pursue sports before ‘settling down’ into my career. My track coach introduced me to the coach of the USA bobsled team. I made the national team and competed for two years. While there, I met many veterans who encouraged me to join the Army. I went through officer candidate school and served for five years.
I love a challenge and I love contributing. After completing my service, I held people-leader roles at Nestlé, OutboundEngine, and Worksmith.
I teamed up with BreakLine to proactively define my path for the future. They introduced me to BetterUp, and it was essentially love at first sight. During the interview process, my BetterUp colleagues brought out things in me that I didn’t even realize I had. I felt valued.
I was also empowered to ask tough questions, like how committed they were to DEI. They encouraged me to assess how I felt about the company and the position, instead of just spending the whole time trying to sell them on me.
I’m not saying that making a career transition is a walk in the park. I am hard on myself and I don’t often take stock of my own accomplishments. But between my wife (who is an angel) and working with BreakLine, by the time I interviewed with BetterUp, I was ready.
Here is my best advice for anyone seeking a dream job:
You have everything you need to succeed; let yourself shine.
These leaps are daunting; activate your support system.
There is a company that wants all of you, and that is where you want to be.
