BreakLiner Tiara Perry joined Workday as a senior associate integrations consultant. She shares part of her story here:
“I served in the Navy and lived all over the world, including two years in Japan. After 8 years, I was ready for a new challenge and set my sights on the tech sector.
Everyone talks about imposter syndrome, and I was definitely living it! But I connected with BreakLine Education and the longer I worked with their team, the more I felt confident in being myself.
When I started talking to Workday, they checked every box. It was a perfect fit. I received an offer letter about three hours after the final round of interviews, and I just broke down in tears. I kept pinching myself; I couldn’t believe it was happening.
Outside of work, I’m a mentor with Black Girls Do Engineer, a nonprofit that helps Black girls prepare for careers in STEM. This is important to me because when I was little, nursing was the only profession I’d seen Black girls like me pursue. I’m so happy to be another success story for my mentees.
For others trying to break into tech, I have three words: research, research, research. I studied companies on LinkedIn. I studied corporate websites. I studied employees’ pages. The more prepared you are, the more you can relax and be yourself in an interview.
The other thing I would say is to really get clear on what you want in an employer and in a position. Because I knew what I wanted, I could quickly determine if something was a good fit, so I wouldn’t waste my time. Once I found Workday, I knew it was the one.
Even if I hadn’t gotten the offer, I probably would have kept applying until they got sick of me!
And my last piece of advice is if you work with BreakLine, trust the process and trust yourself; they’ve got your back.”
Tiara, you are a shining star! And we can’t wait to see all the great things ahead for you at Workday. Thanks to Wayne Ormond, Mike Mahedy, Jerremy Jarvis, Michael York, CSM, Nikki Egenolf, and Jean-Luc Currie for their partnership!
